Images Of Foul Play. Delhi. India.
Images of Foul Play: a project whose partners were PhotoVoice, Safai Karamchari Andolan and Dalit Solidarity Network, UK. As part of the campaign to end the practice of manual scavenging in India by 2010 participants from the community were trained to use photography as a tool for advocacy. The workshop which I led took place in Delhi in February 2010 and was one of the most exciting times in my life. Working with communities using participatory photography as a way of empowerment is probably the most powerful space to be in as a photographer. |
Moving Lives Project with PhotoVoice. London. UK.
Every Tuesday I take the tube to Brixton, a once a week luxury, and I wait to meet these young adults who take the bus and come from all over London. We meet. We look at pictures. They tell me about their lives through the images they capture. There is excitement. There is fun. There are cameras and there are presentations. They teach me the joy of photography, something that so easily slips by when photography becomes a work that you make. There are friendships bracketed in time. There is courage and survival and loss and sometimes words slip out of images. I bring all this back home with me. I will never be able to frame this, name it or share it. I will not be able to tell you and you will not be able to understand. What I have from this project finds its space within the ruptures in language. And I want that to just be. |
